Back to School BBQ

Don’t miss the Back to School BBQ this Friday, August 13th beginning at 5:30. This is also an evening where you may bring your child’s school supplies and meet his/her teacher for next school year. We will eat afterwards, so bring lawn chairs or blankets as we will do this on the east lawn of the school. The BBQ was a huge success last year and we hope it’s an even greater success this year!

The staff and students at Val Jackson Elementary welcome you to spend time in the school. Whether it be five minutes or five hours, the amount of time you volunteer is determined strictly by what your schedule permits. Please consider the many opportunities to volunteer and complete the form on the following page.

Box Tops for Education

Now is the time to gather those Box Tops you've got laying around at home and send them to school with your student. Our school submitted over $200 worth last year!

Conference Time!

Val Jackson Elementary will conduct Parent/Teacher Conferences March 9, 10 and 11th. This is an excellent opportunity for us, as parents, to ask questions of our child’s teacher and review our child’s academic progress. School will dismiss at 1:30 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

South-Central Legislative Delegation Forum Scheduled

A public forum featuring state legislators serving south-central Kansas has been scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, in the Suderman Room of the Wichita State University Metroplex at 29th and Oliver. Go! Speak up! Be heard! OUR KIDS ARE WORTH IT!!!

Board Night Out

A community forum with Wichita Board of Education members will take place on Monday, March 1 at two locations. The discussions will take place at 6:30-8:00pm at Southeast High School and 6:30-8:00pm at West High School. Your participation can make an impact on future decisions regarding the budget and public education in Wichita.

Budget

Hopefully, as a USD 259 parent, you are already aware of the budget crisis our district faces during this upcoming school year.

In case you haven't heard, cuts in state funding for public schools have caused USD 259 to face $25 million in budget reductions for the 2010-2011 school year. While the BOE was tasked with a similar situation for the 2009-2010 school year, they did their best to make cuts with as little impact to classroom and staff positions as possible. Unfortunately, this time, it's going to really hurt...everyone.
